Archives for the month of: August, 2011

Felix had his two-month checkup yesterday. He is now 13 lbs. 11 oz. and 24″ long! That puts him in the 100% percentile for weight (he’s actually above the 100% line), and 97% percentile for height. He’s gonna be a big boy! Not bad for a premie…he caught up real quick.

Even though he’s big for his age, developmentally he still lags behind a bit…that’s okay though because with premies you have to adjust your expectations and calculate his progress based on his due date, not his birth date.

His latest development is that he is finally seeing a bit farther and has discovered his crib mirror. He’ll now lay there and talk to the reflection! It’s a bonus for us because it keeps him busy for a bit, but we have to be careful not to leave him there too long because he’ll babble and kick himself into a frenzy. We’ve now learned to take the mirror down at night, otherwise he will wake up and then get rilled up looking at that “other baby.”

We headed out for sushi to celebrate Dad’s birthday. Felix wasn’t very interested…well, it is an acquired taste.

Wake up and smell the sushi! Wait, never mind...please stay asleep through dinner!

It was an opportunity for Felix to hang out with Alan “Uncle J” Lehtola – Alan was Felix’s first visitor in the hospital, but this picture is the first time Alan actually got to hold him.

Hangin' with Alan

so happy to snuggle with dad

Normally Felix wakes us up crying in the usual baby way. However, every once in awhile he sleeps past his next feeding time and we get to wake him up gently.

We put him to bed swaddled up tight – it comforts him and helps him sleep longer – but he does enjoy a good long, squeaky stretch when we unwrap him!

Felix finally got to meet Aunt Stephanie – his third and final auntie! She stopped by to visit on her way to Jacksonville to hang out with Felix’s other cousins.

Don't let Felix's angelic pose fool you - he was hungry and really fussy in the nursery

Out on the porch after lunch...now he's squirmy because he wants to sit up

Finally happy and chilling out with aunt Stephanie

...and then he falls asleep in an instant

Sarah borrowed a Maya Wrap (made in Guatemala) from a mom friend to try out. We didn’t have high hopes for Felix liking it much since he doesn’t like to be on his tummy for very long, even when you just hold him against your chest. He protested when she started to put him in it, but to our amazement once we had his head cinched down tightly by the wrap he fell asleep immediately!

It felt pretty secure for being just one piece of fabric held on with two rings. However, having all of the baby’s weight on one shoulder was a bit much and we’ll probably try to find a different wrap that distributes the weight more evenly.

Look ma, no hands!

Strapped in and sleeping soundly

A dramatization of real events…

Dad knew his long beard would have to go eventually

And Felix goes for the beard!

Noooooo! Not the beard!

Ha ha! I got some!!

Now sporting a shorter, more Felix-proof beard
